Sports fans will be in for a treat as Lanarkshire’s response to the National Fitness Games arrives in Hamilton next month
A weekend of competitive sports is coming to Lanarkshire next month.
With gyms having been forced to shut down for extended periods of time over the past year due to the pandemic, Gym55 in Hamilton is celebrating the return of live events with its own athletic competition.
Dubbed the ’55 Fitness Games’, the event sees male and female athletes take on the challenge in front of spectators with £ 1,000 in prizes up for grabs.

On Saturday 7 August and Sunday 8 August, teams and athletes will compete to be crowned ‘Fittest in Scotland’.
Gym owner Alan Strachan wants to redefine how we classify fitness by challenging three main pillars: speed, strength and power in one event, all at his Clydesdale Street site.
Alain said Lanarkshire Live: “The idea for the games came from the organization of numerous events within the Gym55 club, internal competitions, which have always been very successful.
“I compete in functional fitness competitions in England and after many years of competing in different competitions I felt there was a gap in the market in Scotland that I enjoyed the challenge of trying to be successful .
“As a spectator, it will be exciting to see athletes who train most days of the week and most weeks of the year being pushed to their 100% limit in three extremely grueling events.”
Alan says that integrating all three into one event is a real test of an individual’s athletic ability and that spectators are going to be in for a treat next month.
Locals will be welcome to the fully open-air venue with Café 57 Bar on hand to provide refreshments, as well as Cooper’s Craft Butchers of Bellshill providing food for the event.
BT Sport and Red Bull presenter Lauren Smith also promotes fitness extravagance.
There will also be entertainment with DJ Steven Brown providing the music to keep the heartbeat of the athletes and spectators alike.
Competitors will also have access to world-class rehabilitation equipment and experts in the gymnasium’s recovery rooms that will be on-site.
Organizers say it is a community event that is warmly welcomed by all the local businesses that contribute to its success as well as the people of Hamilton, Lanarkshire and the Scottish fitness family at large.
The event is divided into a women’s competition which takes place on Saturday and a men’s competition which takes place on Sunday.
And there are still places available for female athletes interested in getting involved. Applicants are encouraged to express their interest as early as possible before the start of the games in less than three weeks.
Alan added: “Competitions usually take place anywhere, but it is very difficult to find top class competition that generates the level of excitement of 55games.
“It’s great to be able to give hard-working gym goers the chance to show off their skills and effort and give them a chance to win £ 500. “
