Here’s where you can bet in Arizona starting Thursday
Just five months after Arizona lawmakers made event betting legal in the state, some operators are preparing to go live at the earliest possible moment – at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. The Arizona Department of Gaming recently issued 18 event betting licenses – eight to professional sports teams / franchises and 10 to tribal casinos across the state.
Most of the major operators in partnership with professional teams / franchises plan to go live in one way or another on Thursday. BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and Penn National Gaming / Barstool Sportsbook will launch digital platforms, while some will also welcome punters for in-person betting. Bally Bet, in partnership with the WNBA Mercury, will not launch its digital platform until next year and does not have an outlet, while the NHL Phoenix Coyotes do not have an announced partner.
FanDuel, which was the first to announce market access to Arizona when it teamed up with the Phoenix Suns last fall, will open its state-of-the-art space at the Footprint Center at 9 a.m. Thursday. Governor Doug Ducey and former NBA players Channing Frye and Richard Jefferson will be on hand for a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. followed by a Thursday night football opening night.
The modern bookie, who will only be the second in the United States to open in an NBA arena (William Hill, now Caesars, opened the first at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, last summer), is located in a converted restaurant space. It will feature LED screens that surround the viewing area, live counters, kiosks and a seating / viewing area. Players can enter the space from the street or from a lobby inside the Footprint Center.
âOur technology is user-friendly and intuitive,â said Jose Torres, director of sportsbook design and construction for FanDuel. Sport grip. âYou don’t need an engineering degree to bet. It is very easy to use. The other part of the technology, the state-of-the-art LED screens that surround the viewing area, create a more immersive experience and we try to create an experience that you wouldn’t have at home.
Throwing dovetails with the NFL kickoff
Arizona’s launch coincides with the start of the NFL season, which kicks off with the Dallas Cowboys at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. The league is in partnership with most of the major operators, as BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, FoxBet, PointsBet and WynnBet have all signed deals.
BetMGM will leverage its partnership with the NFL during opening week by launching its new âWin ââLike a Kingâ commercial, featuring Jamie Foxx, during games.
On the tribal side, Kindred is among those that will go live. Partnering with the Fort Yuma Quechan tribe, Kindred aims to launch its mobile platform – Unibet – on Thursday, according to Senior Vice President Manuel Stan. âOn the retail front, we are aiming for launch by the end of the month, or as soon as all of our partners obtain the necessary licenses to operate in the state,â Stan said.
The tribe owns and operates the Paradise Casino in Yuma, near the California border.
Other authorized tribes that have announced partners are Ak-Chin Indian Community (Fubo Sportsbook), Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation (BetFred), San Carlos Apache Tribe (WynnBet), San Juan Souther Paiute (Digital Gaming) and Tribe Tonto Apache (TwinSpires). There are also four licensed tribes that have not announced partners, and BetMGM has gained market access through the NFL Cardinals, but also has a deal with Gila River Casinos.
